Hideaki Anno as Ultraman in his fan film (image via moviewalker)
Hideaki Anno finally got to make his mark on the Ultraman franchise with Shin Ultraman, which was released in Japanese theaters on May 13. But that wasn’t the producer’s foray into Ultraman-filmmaking, with the Evangelion director helming DAICON FILM’s Return of Ultraman fan-film back in 1983, as well as starring as the titular hero, in his own jacket that he made.

Now, nearly 20 years after the fan film, Anno’s Ultraman jacket will be getting its own official – albeit limited – release, letting fans cosplay as the young director. It comes pre-weathered (via printing), making it feel like it was worn during a battle with a kaiju or was in Anno’s closet for a while, as well as a metal badge that acts as Ultraman’s chest light.
Hideaki Anno’s Return of Ultraman cosplay jacket is available now for pre-order over on COSPA’s online store for 17,600 yen (US$139) for a mid-September release. Only 300 jackets will be released in the limited run.
For something a little more modern, COSPA will also be releasing a jacket based on the design of Shin Ultraman, giving off a more cleaner look.
