This year, Sword Art Online is going mobile — and global!

As part of the series’s continued tenth anniversary celebrations, mobile game Sword Art Online Variant Showdown will be coming to smartphones around the world later this year. The game was announced as part of the series’s 10th anniversary stage event at AnimeJapan this weekend.

SAOVS launches a new story, revolving around a game titled Cross Edge. The game, designed by a genius junior high schooler, has been gaining popularity. But Kirito hears a rumor at Dicey Cafe: if you’re killed by a certain hooded player, you will lose part of your memory — a fact that reminds Kirito of a PK guild named Killing Coffin.

SAOVS will be free to play with optional microtransactions. The official Japanese Twitter account is now open, and the game is currently running both pre-registration and gift campaigns. More news on the upcoming release is scheduled to drop on April 2.

The announcement of SAOVS accompanies even more Sword Art Online anniversary announcements, including the upcoming Sword Art Online -Progressive- film Scherzo of Deep Night and the memorial event Sword Art Online Fulldive.
