While finally falling to second place in the third week of its release, the cumulative box office revenue of Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021 had reached 1.3 billion yen (10.72 million USD) on 1.09 million admissions to become the top-grossing Japanese anime film of 2022 so far.
The 107-minute 41st feature film in the Doraemon anime franchise earned 236 million yen (1.94 million USD) on 193,000 admissions on its third weekend of March 19-20, which was 16 percent down from its second weekend gross. At this point, the film’s cumulative box office gross is about 60 percent of the first three-week gross of the previous 40th film Doraemon: Nobita’s New Dinosaur released in August 2020 and earned 3.35 billion yen from its total domestic run, so its final box office result is expected to be around only two billion yen or so.
In its 13th weekend, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 ranked fifth, one position down from the previous weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 13 billion yen (107.43 million USD) on 9.28 million admissions, making it the 20st top-grossing film of all-time in Japan, surpassing Jurassic Park with 12.85 billion yen.
The live-action film adaptation of Kiminori Wakasugi‘s (Detroit Metal City) comedy manga KAPPEI made its sixth place debut with 80 million yen (66,1,326 USD). It also ranked fifth on Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.50/5.0 based on 517 reviews.
Following the broadcast on Japanese satellite TV station WOWOW’s WOWOW PRIME channel on January 30, Kenji Kamiyama’s (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) new feature-length original anime Eien no 831 (The Eternal 831) was released in 36 theaters in Japan on March 18 and ranked fifth in Kogyo Tsushinsha’s mini theater ranking.
