The first two and a half minute animation part of the live-action film based on Maru Ayase’s Yagate Umi he to Todoku (Eventually Reaching the Sea) novel has been released on YouTube. The watercolor-style footage was produced by WIT STUDIO (Attack on Titan, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress), and co-directed by Yutaro Kubo and Satomi Maiya, who recently worked on the studio’s short anime Totsukuni no Shoujo (The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún).

The novel was published from Kodansha in 2016 and its live-action film adaptation directed by Ryutrao Nakagawa, the director of Studio Ghibli-produced tourism promotion CM for Aichi Prefecture, is set to be released in Japan on April 1, 2022.

Its story centers on Mana (Yukino Kishii), who is unable to accept the death of her best friend Sumire (Minami Hamabe) who suddenly disappeared the day before the Great East Japan Earthquake, sets out on a journey to find Sumire’s secret despite her deep sadness. In the animation part, the fantastic world of Sumire is expressed with delicate watercolor touch.
