Sony Music Labels announced today that TK from Ling tosite Sigure‘s 2014 single song “unravel,” the OP theme for the first season of the TV anime Tokyo Ghoul, had reached the milestone of 200 million streams on the world’s largest music streaming service, Spotify. Only a few anime theme songs have surpassed the 200 million mark on Spotify alone, such as “Gurenge” (LiSA / Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba), “Yoru ni Kakeru” (YOASOBI / BEASTERS), and “Kaikai Kitan” (Eve / JUJUTSU KAISEN).
“unravel” was released as Toru “TK” Kitajima‘s (the vocalist/guitarist of the three-member rock band Ling tosite Sigure) first solo single on July 23, 2014, and its popularity in North America has surpassed that of Japan, and it is also highly popular in Europe and Asia. In December 2021, it was chosen as the most played Japanese artist song overseas in the past five years on Spotify.
Kitajima says, “Approximately 47.6 billion seconds in total. This song seems to travel through time and space far beyond my life. It is embarrassing to know the time that travels endlessly in the eardrums of people all over the world, but I am very happy to know it. Keep up the good travels.”
